Press Conference of Sri Milind Parande, General Secretary of VHP, in Bengaluru on 27.08.2020

A Press conference was organised at Bengaluru chaired by VHP’s All India General Secretary, Sri Milind Parande today at Rashtrotthana Parishat. Dr. Vijayalaxmi Deshmane, a renowned oncologist and All India Vice President of the VHP, Sri Koteshwar Sharma, Joint Gen Secy of VHP were present.

VHP feels that it is a good thing that the state government of Karnataka has taken strict action against the rioters in the recent Bengaluru riots. As many vehicles, many houses and national property was destroyed by fire during the riots by a section of Muslim society, we feel that the damages for the same must be paid by the rioters. As in Delhi and many other places in the country, such senseless violence against the Hindu society has been orchestrated by a section of Muslim society deliberately on flimsiest of excuses. And thus, such violent tendencies and actions must be punished harshly. Forces and people inciting such violence and supporting must also be dealt with harshly.

VHP has served the whole society in the country during this corona pandemic.  Over 1,74,00,000 people have been fed with prepared food and over 40 Lakh families have been given dry rations that will last them for minimum of 15 days. Over 40 Lakh face masks have been supplied to people. Over 2 Lakh cows and her progeny have been supplied with water and gross during corona pandemic time.

Now in the state of Bihar, a very severe flood situation is faced by the people. VHP is supplying food, medicines, solar light and plastic or tarpaulin to thousands of flood affected people in Bihar in the districts of Muzaffarpur, Madhubani, Begusarai, Gopalganj etc.

When Indian soldiers were attacked by the Chinese army in eastern Ladakh, 20 Indian Soldiers and officers were martyred. In the ensuing battle, 43 Chinese soldiers were also killed by the valiant Indian soldiers. Thus VHP has appealed to the society to boycott all Chinese goods, as buying the Chinese goods is as good as strengthening the hands of the enemy.

VHP expects that Bhagavan Shri Ram Lalla will sit in the sanctum sanctorum of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple in next 2 to 3 years. If in the next 3-4 months, an appeal is made to make donations for building of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi temple by Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirtha kshetra Nyas, VHP is committed to support it wholeheartedly with all the strength at it’s disposal.

Sri Keshava Hegde, VHP’s Kshetriya Sanghatana Karyadarshi, Sri Suryanarayana of the Bajarang Dal, VHP’s Sri Basavaraj, Sanghatana Karyadarshi of Karnataka Dakshina Pranth were also present.

Sustainable Environment: Living in harmony with Nature has been an integral and unique part of our Bharatiya culture and tradition. This has been abundantly reflected in a variety of traditional practices, religious beliefs, rituals, folklore, arts&crafts, and in the daily lives of the Bharatiya people from time immemorial. Many ancient cultures tell us how communities lived in harmony with nature, with a tradition of reverence for the elements that constitute ecosystem‘s, drawing their sustenance from natural resources and at the same time protecting the environment that sustains them. Conservation of nature and natural resources has been a much challenging task in the present state of affairs where economy prevails over ecology and increases our social responsibility.

Sarsanghchalak Param Pujaniya Dr. Mohan Bhagwat addresses at the nation wide Prakruti Vandana program

All of us are participating in this special program of ‘Paryavaran Divas’ (Environment Day) being organised on 30 August by the Hindu Spiritual Service Foundation.

Watch the full video here

‘Environment’, this word is very often heard and spoken today. And this is also an occasion to celebrate a day dedicated to the environment, that too universally. The reason for this is the lifestyle which the world has been following or is still prevalent predominantly all across the world today. This lifestyle is not sustainable and environmentally friendly. It believes that man has to live by conquering nature.

RSS Sarsanghachalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat

This lifestyle believes that nature is for human consumption and man has no responsibility towards it. It assumes that man has complete authority over nature to run this way of life. And we are living like this for the last 200-250 years. The ill effects of this lifestyle are now coming to light, and the horrors it has resulted in are now visible. If it goes on like this, then we will not be existing live on this planet. Or it could also be that this earth will not exist.

Hence, man started to rethink now and he has felt that the environment should be protected. That is the reason why we are celebrating Environment Day. But this is about the lifestyle being followed for nearly 2000 years, and especially the kind of deviation adopted in the last 300 years. But the Indian way has been very different. Our ancestors understood the truth behind our existence in its entirety. Since then they understood that we too are a part of the whole nature.

Just like the fact that our body can function only when different parts of the body function. And as long as the body is alive, only then a part of the body can function. If there is no life in the body, the heart stops, in a while the brain also stops working, then the nerves and the intestines stop, all the components stop working, at last they die. The body is dependent on the functions of the organs, the organ is dependent on the pranic energy received by the body.

This is the same relationship we have with earth. We are a part of it and it is our duty to nurture the creation. To be alive, we take something from the universe which we should not exploit but we are exploiting that very creation today. Our ancestors understood this way of living and created the lifestyle not only for a day or a single body but for the entire life. Here, it is said that one should not touch the trees in the evening as the trees fall asleep. There is also life in the trees, and a part of the same creation. Just as there is the animal kingdom, so is the plant kingdom.

Thousands of years before the knowledge of modern science came to us, every ordinary illiterate person of Bharat knew that trees should not be disturbed in the evening. Our lifestyles, things that are part of it and not part of it, are all interwoven.

Everyday, as part of the Bharatiya lifestyle one used to have their own food only after sacrificing food to various animals; flour for the ants in the house, grass for the cattle, food for the dogs, grains for the birds, worms for the insects, and after offering food for any guests in the village who might be hungry. This offering is not the violent sacrifice but the cooked food in your house. It is the responsibility of human beings to nurture all of them because man gets nutrition from all these creatures. We used to live by understanding this.

Therefore, rivers are also worshiped here, trees, plants and Tulsi are all worshiped. In our tradition, the mountains, the cows, and even the snakes are all worshiped. There is an omnipresent lifeforce in the entire creation. This is the same lifeforce which we saw in every creature and revered it. We treated them with respect and considered them as being intimate to us. We treated them as friends so that everyone lived a life of mutual cooperation. This was the Bharatiya way of life.

It is said in the Bhagavad Gita that when you behave well with the gods, the gods will also behave well with you. It is because of this mutual good behavior, the world works and this was our lifestyle. But due to the influence of the modern misguided lifestyles, we forgot it. Therefore, today we too have to remember it by celebrating it as environment day. This is a good thing. This should be remembered in every household. This year we have initiated August 30 as a day of remembering nature. But we have Nag Panchami here, we have Govardhan Puja here. We observe Tulsi marriage here. We have to celebrate all these days in today's context and have to revive and reinvent these traditional practices throughout our lives. It is only then that the new generation will learn them and experience them.

We too are components of the same nature. We have to get nourishment from nature, not conquer nature. We have to keep nature alive by getting nourishment from nature itself. It is only by adopting this way of life, the next generation will follow and only then will we be able to overcome the deviation that has occured in the last 300-350 years during the next 100-200 years.

The world will be safe, mankind will be safe and life will be beautiful. While celebrating this day, we have to be aware that we are not merely indulging in some entertainment program, but to nurture the whole creation, to make our life beautiful, and for the advancement of all. I think that we should think with an open mind and implement the message of this day by bringing about small changes in our lifestyles and implement it each day throughout the year. I put these thoughts in front of you for your consideration. I wish you all the best on this day and end my statement.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) Sarsanghachalak, Dr. Mohan Bhagwat, condoled the sad demise of former President of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee. In his video message he has said that the death has caused immense loss to many karyakartas including him.

‘I had met Pranab da twice when he was the Hon. President of India and 3-4 times after his tenure as President too. His warm, generous demeanor and simplicity during our first meet, made me forget that I was talking to the President of India, and it felt as if I was speaking to a senior member of the household’ Dr. Mohan Bhagwat has said.

When Pranab da had visited the RSS’ Sangha Shiksha varga, there was an introductory meeting held, with 10-12 other guests present. Just as the organizers were about to commence the introduction, Pranab da stood up and said, ”Look, we are all here for an introduction. I will start with myself…I am Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India”, he added, and sat down after his brief introduction.
This was an unimaginable event, for all those present. All of them were stunned, as well impressed with Pranab da’s simplicity and his nature of mingling with everyone said Sarsanghachalak remembering the former President.

He is a great and an experienced intellectual, with maturity and simplicity, with a personality that enables him to mingle with everyone. Pranab da had knowledge about various fields, and his experience in life also enabled him to have great wisdom to be able to use his knowledge effectively, in accordance with the situation. This is why, he was a senior mentor to many of us he said.

Anyone who spent time with Pranab da, and listened to him, was left yearning for more. We could realize how our personality was constantly getting enriched, on associating with him”.

Part1 of the speech
Part 2 of the speech

“Amidst a long-standing political tenure, Pranab da lead a successful life of a skilled statesman. Despite knowing all kinds of tactics and deceptions, he went beyond such political tactics, and strongly believed everyone as his people, despite the political differences, for the upliftment of our nation,” said Dr. Bhagwat.

“We have lost a great scholar, a dedicated patriot and a wise elder who would guide us in our social and personal lives. Despite having been in many people’s lives just for a short period, including mine, Pranab da‘s memory shall always be immortal. The feeling that he should have stayed with us longer, will never abate. We are powerless against destiny. We all participate with his family, in the mourning of Pranab da, with solidarity. We pray for the sadgati of the soul”, concluded Sarsanghachalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat.

Appeasement continues: Siddaramaiah urges release of ‘innocents’ arrested in #BengaluruRiots

The recent D J Halli, K G Halli violence shook the peaceful city of Bengaluru. The gathering of thousands of Muslims and cry of Allah hu Akbar had resulted in a war like situation on Aug11. The goons had set afire the houses, police station and public property.

Alleged inciting Facebook comment by MLA Akhanda Srinivasamurthy’s nephew Naveen P is said to be the reason behind the violence. The politicians have entered the fray from the day one of the incident. They have been choosing a cosy comfortable position suiting their vote bank politics. Though not condemning the gory incident, this section of politicians have resorted to play safe to not hurt the Muslim minds and its leaders.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who was admitted for Covid19 during the time of these riots has made time to visit the place of riots today.

His tweet calls for a punishment to those involved in violence. But he does not forget to blame the police for not taking swift action against Naveen, the person who posted derogatory content against Prophet Mohammed. Is the former CM Siddaramaiah trying to imply that the violence is a result of delay in arresting Naveen? It can be remembered that, Home Minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai had stated earlier that the arrest was immediate and the violence broke out yet.

Former Karnataka CM, Siddaramaiah’s tweet

Either Siddaramaiah is mis-informed or is trying to support the act of violators through such a tweet. Sadly it only throws bad light on the police department. It is to be noted that police station also that day was burning. Even in case of delay of arrest of Naveen, is it not deplorable that the Muslims choose the route of violence rather than treading the path of peaceful protest. Former CM fails to address it.

Read the interview of Home Minister Bommai which narrates the sequence of events

Siddaramaiah who once donned the office of Chief Minister has also witnessed the killings of 20 odd volunteers of Hindu organisations during his tenure and many from the fringe Muslim groups of PFI, SDPI were arrested then. In his tweet he also demands the police to let go off innocents who are arrested. It is quite natural for anybody trusting the police system and the Government to note that innocents would not be troubled unnecessarily sans reasons.

But ones who do not beleive the system resort to violence and politicians like Siddaramaiah echo that innocents arrested are to be released.

Falling Economy: Allow the dust to settle down

– VISHWESHWARA BHAT BANGARADKA.

When great depression struck American booming economy in 1929, it was like a bolt from the blue. The effects of the depression immediately impacted Europe as well because those economies were intertwined pretty closely. Its effects were not felt in far away countries of Asia and Africa as their economies had very little connection with the developed world. Globalization was just beginning then. The economists of the day started scratching their heads because most of them had not even imagined that such a catastrophe would befall the developed economies.

It is then that top economists like JM Keynes etc. advised the Govts to increase the public spending so that the aggregate demand in the countries is boosted , leading to more production and employment.. The tool of deficit financing caught the imagination of all the rulers and was seen as a cure for all economic problems.. At that time it worked also because the economies were not as huge as they are now and was within the manageable proportions.

Hence Govts were seen as mighty in managing and giving directions to the economies.. But this policy started loosing its sheen in about five decades and in the eighties, deficit financing had not been fancied by developed countries.. All these permeates to an inference that governments are not as Omnipotent as it was believed to be so far as the economic growth of the nations are concerned.

Deficit financing is actually the most popular tool in the hands of the govts. Simply put, it means that govt is willing to spend much more than its revenue. But to finance the deficit, govt borrows from the public by way of bonds or sometimes loans from other. But governments all over the world are seen as most inefficient in spending.. It involves a lot of wastage and pilferage. When the govt sells bonds to public, a large volume of investable money is transferred from private who are very efficient to the inefficient hands of the govt.. This leads to less than optimum results. So Govts are generally not encouraged to go for deficit financing.

picture from internet

In 2008, economic crisis hit the global economy. The economists did not have any tenable option and hence suggested to governments to go for fiscal stimulus which again is similar to deficit financing. Developed countries like USA, EU countries who were not having any deficit budgets till then resorted to a deficit above 5-6% in their fiscal policies. All Govts followed the advise very religiously. But after 7 years or to be precise in 2015, leading economic advisors of the G20 countries felt that result of this policy was nil. Hence they declared that the role of fiscal policy is very limited and the economies should be allowed to find energy on their own and regain the animal instinct to invest.

Only the central Banks were monitoring the inflation through their tight monetary policies. Surprisingly in one years time when Govts stayed quietly, the economies of USA and EU started showing green shoots of activity leading to decent economic growth and the nations were back on groove.

The impact of the present pandemic of COVID-19 is disastrous to say the least. It has released a cascading effect on every section of the society in every corner of the world. The governments of the developed countries have leaned back on their experience of 2008 crisis and are adopting a cautious approach. It is true that some of them have increased the govt spending by even 10% or more but this time it is directed at controlling the effect of the virus and also to contain the damage it has been causing to people and economy. No government is at present seriously pursuing any policy to reverse the trend of downturn in their economies. They seem to be biding their time till the dust settles down and then may try to reassess the situation in a holistic way.

picture from internet

Indian governments also need to be very restrained in its approach in tackling the economic disaster that we are presently in. Any knee jerk reaction will do no favour to the economy. The better time will come only when it feels it appropriate rather than on the direction of the rulers. Govt can really use this hiatus to rectify some of the huge anomalies that are the bottlenecks to our growth.. This will make our economy healthy and ready to reap the benefits of the good times as and when it comes.

We need to concentrate on really bringing drastic changes in the banking sector which is horrendously inadequate to participate in global economic system. All countries which have grown including China have one thing in common.

All of them had set up some mega banking institutions unlike India where banking is still oriental and nascent. Government can really work to remove some of the policy paralysis that have infected our economic system like land, labour and infra sectors. A robust economy should also have a strong manufacturing but in India this sector is woefully short of breath now. Government should also be more sober in public positioning and should stop resorting to raising the expectations of the people through unnecessary bravado.

Sep 4: National Newspaper Carrier Day, let’s say our THANKS.

$

If you are an avid newspaper reader you would have had a situation in life waiting for the newspaper distribution boy to deliver the day’s newspaper. It’s already 6.30am. The fresh Chikamagaluru coffee is brewing at the kitchen but you have the determination of not sipping the coffee without the newspaper in your hand. You might have watched the news debates in TV channels till late night, browsed over social media for news, but the newspaper has always become a key element to your coffee and for the day being more cheerful.

Of course, we would have scolded the news paper boy for delivering late but often forget to thank him for he would have many a times dropped the newspaper at home much before you would have got up from bed.

Today is the day. Thank them! September 4 of every year is celebrated as NATIONAL NEWSPAPER CARRIER DAY. There are tens of thousands of such distributors who set off from home in the morning to gather at a place-arrange the newspapers and plan meticulously for the distribution. Some are on their mopeds while most on their bicycles. The passion they possess to make our mornings better is to be valued more. Their essence of Karmayoga of waking up way early in the morning on a daily basis without taking a weekly break is commendable. While many may opine paper distributors get into the profession for the poverty they are going through, there are certainly many other professions to evade poverty, one need not get up at 4:30 am in the morning.

Sri Vishweshwar Bhat, Chief Editor of Vishwavani thanked the distributors through his tweet today. It may be remembered that the Editor in 2016 during the launch of his news paper Vishwawani had been to a locality in Bengaluru where newspapers get segregated and had launched it’s first edition through the paper boys.

Vishwa Samvada Kendra(VSK) as a media centre works with the media of all kinds and one of the VSKs in Bharat had felicitated a newspaper distributor during the Narada Jayanti (an event to remember the pioneer journalist Maharshi Narada). The distributor had not taken off from work for more than a decade. His dedication to work and his devotion of delivery of newspapers to not stop was recognised by the VSK.

RSS Swayamsevaks have also in the past worked with the news paper carrier boys. They have celebrated Raksha Bandhan with those boys and distributors sending out a message of gratitude as well as expressing to protect them to eventually protect Bharat. The Swayamsevaks also on the day of Sankranti had been to the distribution corners to share the traditional ellu-bella with the paper boys.

There are instances of such dedicated carrier boys who have come a long way in their personal career too. There are inspiring stories of such carriers growing as distributors, starting an agency and employing more boys with them. The leaves these boys have are those 5-6 days when the news papers are not printed.

Even during the times of Covid and the rumours of Covid19 spread, the news papers boys silently did their work and there was not a day complained of the newspaper not delivered at home. They are certainly to be congratulated for the feat.

Despite being in the era of digital communication with epapers making the mark the paper carrier business and reading of physical newspapers would never diminish believe many in the media.

VSK has received the copy of the report. Read the full report here: Below are the salient observations from the committee.

  • That the riots were pre-planned and organised.
  • The mob has specifically targeted certain prominent Hindus in the area.
  • That the entire incident qualifies to be a riot against the state with the motive of reducing the faith of common people in the State.
  • It could be seen from the FIRs and certain interactions with the victims, that Local people were also involved in carrying out this riot. The committee is of the opinion that the locals were not only involved in execution but were also aware about it in advance.
  • Despite attempts being made to project the same as political rivalry, it was undoubtedly communally motivated. The Committee is of the opinion that based on the kind of houses that have been attacked and people who have been targeted, the motive of the riots could also be fear mongering so as to change the demography and turn the area into a Muslim majority one.
  • The Committee is of the opinion that SDPI and PFI are involved in planning and execution of this incident.
CFD submitted the Fact Finding report to the Hon Chief Minister today

The Committee has a set of recommendations to the State Government:

  • All the costs that have been incurred by the State and private persons have to be recovered by attaching the property of the rioters.
  • The pattern of the riots is common with that of Delhi and Sweden. Therefore, it is imperative for the state to investigate the incident holistically and not consider them to be isolated and local.
  • The funding received by individuals and religious extremist organisations who are involved in anti-social activities be tracked and continuously monitored by involving the NIA.
  • Potential areas that might face such communal tensions must be identified by the Police in advance and short-term and long-term plans must be made to curb such tensions.
  • Cyber dome must be established so as to ensure that Social Media is not used for hate mongering against any religion, race, class, sect etc.
  • It is recommended that drug menace be curbed with iron fists.
  • It is further recommended that intelligence generation mechanisms have to be strengthened by the Police at various levels so as to prevent the occurrence of any such riots.
  • With the abolition of Section 66A of Information Technology Act, 2000, a mechanism has to be evolved to prevent and prosecute derogatory, abusive and hate content targeting any religion, race, class, organisation or sect of people.

A Garland Of Inspiring Anecdotes From The Life Of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan

This article was first published in VSK TN page. VSK Karnataka remembers the great philosopher, academician, and statesman who was the first Vice President, and second President of Swatantra Bharat. This article is is a collation of anecdotes from the life of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Patted on the cheek of Chairman Mao

Patting powerful men on the cheek seemed to be Dr. S.Radhakrishnan’s  favourite way of disarming them. In the autumn of 1957, Dr Radhakrishnan paid an official visit to China. I (Natwar Singh) was present at his meeting with Chairman Mao Tse Tung. After shaking hands with the almighty Mao, the Vice-President flouted every rule of protocol. He patted Mao on his right cheek. The Chairman was taken aback. All present froze. Dr Radhkrishanan uttered 12 words which melted the tension. “Mr Chairman, don’t be alarmed. I did the same thing to Stalin.” The Vice-President was shown great courtesy and respect. The scholars in China were familiar with his writings. The visit was, by all accounts, a success. (According to K. Natwar Singh, an Indian Embassy official  in Beijing)

Unlike Vijayalakshmi Pandit, SR won Stalin’s Heart

In 1949, Dr. Radhakrishnan was appointed ambassador to the Soviet Union. The appointment raised many eyebrows because people wondered what kind of an impression Radhakrishnan, a student of idealist philosophy, would make on Joseph Stalin, an ardent communist. In 1950, Radhakrishnan was called to the Kremlin to meet with the Premier. Radhakrishnan told Stalin, “We had an emperor in India who, after bloody victory, renounced war and became a monk. You have waded your way to power through force. Who knows that might happen to you also.” Radhakrishnan was referring to Stalin’s infamous “bloody” purges. Stalin smiled and replied, “Yes, miracles do happen sometimes. I was in a theological seminary for five years!” On April 5, 1952, a few days before Radhakrishnan’s departure for India, Stalin called on Radhakrishnan. Radhakrishnan records Stalin’s face being bloated. Radhakrishnan patted him on the cheek and on the back. Stalin said, “You are the first person to treat me as a human being and not as a monster. You are leaving us and I am sad. I want you to live long. I have not long to live.” Stalin died six months later. Radhakrishnan’s legacy in Moscow was a firm and friendly understanding between India and the Soviet Union. A relationship which has flourished over the years and has become even stronger. (From a write up by Professor G.Venkataraman.) Ashok Kapur in his book ‘The Diplomatic Ideas and Practices of Asian States,’ writes that Joseph Stalin had refused to meet India’s first ambassador to the country, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit (Jawaharlal Nehru’s sister). Stalin considered her arrogant and aristocratic and confined her to the Indian Embassy. This had a huge affect on Pandit’s psychological wellbeing. In 1949, the failure of the first ambassador forced Nehru to send renowned philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan to Moscow as India’s ambassador. In an eventful three years, Radhakrishnan managed to change the paradigm of India’s relationship with the Soviet Union.

How Jinnah Viewed SR

Radhakrishnan  didn’t seem to have had much use for religious rituals or the practice of Hinduism, with which he was often superficially identified. Muhammad Ali Jinnah says to him in the 1940s while on a train: “You are one of my main enemies. You have made Hinduism respectable.”

Kennedy , SR’s “student”

In 1954, before racial de-segregation, at the peaks of the Eisenhower Republican era, SR spoke to the United States Senate: “No society is static; no law is unchanging; and no constitution is permanent. Given time and patience, radical changes may happen in both in human nature and in systems of society which reflect human nature.”  A young Congressman from Massachusetts sat in the gallery and made notes of the speech.  A decade later, he repeated the very same lines to Radhakrishnan when they met at the White House, by which time the Congressman was known widely as “JFK”.

Patting powerful men on the cheek seemed to be his favourite way of disarming them. He did the same to Mao, who is amazed that somebody could treat him like a young man. Mao’s mandarins, predictably, panicked. He did the same to the Pope, too. (In December, 1964, Pope Paul VI visited India and made him Knight of the Golden Army of Angels, the Vatican’s highest honour for a Head of State).

SR was all For the RSS and NOT the Congress

The acme of Radhakrishnan’s public life comes as vice president and president of India: roles that factions within the ruling Congress party were reluctant to grant, for Radhakrishnan never joined the mother ship. He had also praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for their willingness to help a young country in times of calamity despite being against their contestable ideas. (During his stint in the Banares Hindu University, he responded to an invitation to attend the RSS Shakha in the campus thus: “I shall come to the Shakha when the Sankhya crosses 100”! ) He was close to Gandhi, and then Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the founder of the Jana Sangh. None of this went down well with Nehru, who sought to enrol him in his “camp”

His Hint  to Proselytisers

There were many interpretations of Indian scriptures and philosophy, but Radhakrishnan was perhaps the first Indian philosopher to present to the world the deeper aspects of Indian philosophy. He was truly India’s cultural ambassador to the world. After listening to him, one English lady was prompted to say, “There is no need for us to send missionaries to India.”

Humour, the Best Medicine

Broadly speaking, philosophers are reputed to be lacking in humour. Radhakrishnan was an exceptionally witty man. The King of Greece came to India on a state visit. President Radhakrishnan (he had succeeded Dr Rajendra Prasad) welcomed him at Palam airport. “Your Majesty, You are the first King of Greece to come to India on invitation. Alexander the Great came uninvited.”

Hindutva seeks to emphasise on the commonalities that exist among Indian people belonging to different faiths, rather than hyping up or harping on the differences. Uniformity is not what we aim at, but assimilation: This is consistent with the abiding spirit of India.

In India, the aim of religion is not intellectual conformity to a particular set of dogmas and to bring about uniformity among humankind. Instead, our purpose has been to bring about commonality in diversity. The Upanishadic dictum, ekam sat viprahbahudavadantim (Truth is one and the wise men call it differently) is the idea on which our world view was shaped. In India, religion is not an endless conflict between believers of a particular dogma and those who do not believe in it. Abrahamic religions believe whatever their Prophets have decreed are the only things that are divine and everything else is profane. Our concept of religion is Dharma—that which holds us together. The aim of religion is spiritual, not mere metaphysical conversion. It is a movement from avidya (ignorance) to vidya (knowledge) and bodha (wisdom). When vidya is attained, there is no estrangement. This is Hindu Universalism. In this philosophy, there is no place for looking at binaries. The hallmark of all ideas emanated in the West is this search for binaries and points of conflict. The ultimate aim of all these philosophies emanated from Abrahamic roots is to attain uniformity. But the aim of Dharmic thought is to make the world “one divine whole”. That is why in Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says: “Whenever there is a decline of righteousness, then I send forth myself.” Yada yada hi dharmasya, glanir bhavathi bharata….So Bhagwan takes birth to reinstate Dharma, not to set up a different creed; and the purpose is to lead humanity to Dharma.

Dharma is at the core of India’s civilization. Many imported ideas have been thrust upon us, including Liberalism, Secularism, Communism, Humanism and Multiculturalism, all of which have their origin in Christianity. There has been a concerted effort to shove West’s failed cult of multiculturalism—a sequel to liberal Christianity that “promotes metaphysical guilt”—down our throats and undermine the Indian idea of “Unity in Diversity” or “Hindu Universalism”. Multiculturalism, the antithesis of assimilation, lays its emphasis on differences rather than commonalities. In the West, multiculturalism sought to build a tolerant society against the racist, sexist, and violently homophobic society that existed “before the 1960s”. In reality, it led to the emergence of parallel societies within states, some with radical ideas. It triggered chaos, conflicts, separatism and fuelled fears of takeover of the host society by minorities, the so-called “designated victims” of the current social regime. Despite several host European countries showering interminable welfare benefits, financial assistances and incentives, the guest population of Muslims failed to integrate with the cultural mainstream of the host country. Nicolas Sarkozy, the former French President, had admitted in February 2011 that multiculturalism had failed in his country. He said, “Our Muslim compatriots should be able to live and practice their religion like anyone else…but it can only be a French Islam and not just an Islam in France.”

Several Western politicians like former Australian Prime Minister John Howard have expressed their opposition to multicultural policies. Trevor Phillips, former chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission of the United Kingdom, in his widely publicised study, found that British Muslims were increasingly becoming “a nation within a nation”, thanks to “the failed policy of multiculturalism”. According to Philips, UK is “in danger of sacrificing a generation of young British people to values that are antithetical to the beliefs of most of us, including many Muslims”. He called for a recast of the policy, adopting a tougher approach to integration.

Even as the topic of Muslim integration has become a “hot-button” issue in the West, India has managed to fare better in this regard, thanks to the inherent Dharmic values of this land that have helped humanise Islam. We must bear in mind that integration cannot happen on the basis of false premises and narratives. Honesty should be the buzzword. The Western ideas of secularism and multiculturalism have been thrust upon us to counter the imagined threat of majoritarianism. When asked to suggest steps to bring about harmony between Hindus and Muslims by Dr Saifuddin Jilani, in an interview published in 1972, this is what Param Poojaniya Guruji said: “It is difficult to immediately suggest something specific. But it must be given a serious thought. Real religious education on a wider scale can be one such step. Not the Dharma-less education that is being imparted by nowadays by our politicians, but true, good, religious education which lets people understand the true wisdom of Islam and Hindu Dharma. People should be taught that every religion guides an individual to be true, pure and welfare-oriented… Then, second step is to teach history as it was. Today we are taught a distorted version of history. If there was aggression from the Muslim invaders in the past, say so and also clarify that the aggressors were foreigners and they belong to the past. Muslims today should be told that they belong to this country and that this aggression is not their heritage. Instead of being taught what is true, the Muslim now are today being taught a distorted and false version. Truth cannot be hidden for long. However long you hide it, ultimately it comes out and creates only far worse feelings. Therefore, I say that history should be taught as it is, If Afzal Khan was killed by Shivaji, say that a foreign aggressor was killed by a national hero because of their tense relations. We should tell them that we all belong to this nation. Therefore, our heritage is not of Afzal Khan. But no one has the courage to say so. I have already condemned this mutilation of history many times and condemn it today too.”

All countries, at some point or the other, have to deal with the issue of integration. The best way to deal with it is the Hindutva way: It seeks to emphasise on the commonalities that exist among Indian people belonging to different faiths rather than hyping up or harping on the differences. Uniformity is not what we aim at, but assimilation: This is consistent with the abiding spirit of India. As Vivekananda says: “We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true.” This is Hindu Universalism. It is more powerful and durable and offers a better solution to our problems that haunt us than those which are offered to us “second-hand from Western sources”. When the Sangh talks about “Indianisation”, it talks from this standpoint, though the Left-Liberals have tried to create confusion over this among minority communities. It is important to clear the air on the concept of “Indianisation”. It is not an effort to gobble up other cultures and faiths to give shape to a unified, homogenised “Indian culture”. In this context, I would like to quote Shri Guruji. In an interview to Dr Saifuddin Jilani, Shri Guruji says: “Indianisation was of course the slogan given by Jana Sangh. Why should there be such confusion? Indianisation does not mean converting all people to Hinduism. Let us all realize that we are the children of this soil and we must have our allegiance to this land. We belong to the same society and that our ancestors are common. That our aspirations are also common. Understanding this is Indianisation in the real sense. Indianisation does not mean that one should be asked to quit his religious system. We neither said this nor are we going to say so. Rather we believe that a single religious system for the entire human society is not suitable.”

Hindu views on Environmentalism

In the very first chapter of the Bible, God instructs Adam and Eve to “fill the earth and subdue it”. Judaism, which first produced monotheism, the core philosophy of all Abrahamic religions, was opposed to the Pagan religion which personified forces of nature and deified them—in many ways much similar to Hindu Dharma. In Abrahamic religions, God was someone detached from the earth, sitting high up in the sky, and beyond the forces of nature.

This separation of God from nature has been leading to several far-reaching consequences. Abrahamic religionists imagined that men occupied an exalted position in the natural order compared to the nature-based pagans. The Hebrew Bible says God made humanity a little lower than him, “with dominion over God’s creation”. The God has put “all things under their feet, all sheep and  oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,  whatever passes along the paths of the seas”. In the Epistle to the Romans in the New Testament, Paul, the Apostle, says: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. …For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature” (Romans 1:25& 26).

According to the Biblical concept, the separation between the abode of supernatural God and the human-ruled earth is absolute, and that to venerate nature meant idolatry. Being idolatrous in that sense, Hindus and Pagans became target groups to be converted or killed. The Christians and later Muslims considered it their divine duty to exterminate “idolatrous pagans” and destroy their temples and places of worship. Thousands of temples were destroyed by the Portuguese invaders led by St Xavier in Goa and Kerala and by Muslim invaders in the rest of the country.

According to environmental historian Clarence J. Glacken, one of the key ideas in the religious and philosophical thought of the Western civilization, which is derived from Christianity, is that humans, sinful though they are, nevertheless occupy “a position on earth comparable to that of God in the universe”. This Biblical belief is at the root of all environmental issues in the world today.

In the wake of a looming environmental crisis and the allegation that the problem stemmed from “Christian arrogance and anthropocentrism”, there have been efforts by some Christian denominations to get around this by proposing new concepts like the “stewardship” theory. But this is not a major departure from the original Biblical idea. Moreover, there aren’t many takers for it among conservative Christians in the West. They continue to propagate the theory that the whole debate about the environmental issue is a “scam” and a “hoax”.

The only lasting solution to the issue is to respect the forces of nature. Hindu philosophy considers nature to be mother and that is the best way forward.

With the advent of Marxism, this gap between nature and human beings widened further. If Semitic religions put it overtly, Marx defined his political ideology on the very basis of this division. He explicitly argued that the humankind has evolved after the persistent confrontation with nature.

Marxism, fundamentally a “productivist” ideology, not an inclusive one, has obviously little to say, and little concern, about the fate of the environment. History, therefore, is nothing but human beings’ efforts to subjugate nature. Upon this very premature and pessimistic premise, Communists have erected their ideology and the contemporary development models.
